First Meeting of 2012 in Lido Beach

The year is underway and the first meeting was a success. The windy cold weather did not keep people away and we are ready to mobilize.

Congratulations to Larry Moriarty elected as Treasurer and Dan Volpe as Member-at-Large. The Executive Committee is now complete.

Three goals have been established for the next few months as we continue to organize. They are: (1) Membership (2) Beach Access (3) The Spill Bill and Privatization of Water Treatment Plants in Nassau County.
In order to address these goals we are actively putting together committees. If you are interested or want to learn more, please contact us at Chair@centralLI.surfrider.org.

January Meeting Jan. 18th Lido Firehouse

The first meeting of the New Year will be on January 18th, from 7:30 to 9:30PM at the Lido Firehouse, 255 Lido Blvd, Lido Beach, NY 11561.

The new Executive Committee is eager to meet chapter members new and old and share their ideas on the coming year. Elections will be taking place for Treasurer and (1) At-Large-Member. If you are interested in any of these positions or would like more information please email: Chair@centralli.surfrider.org

The meeting will also address Membership, Beach Access and specific environmental concerns and committee formation. We are urging everyone to attend to get the year off with a strong start.

Central Long Island chapter of Surfrider Foundation will be moving the meetings around our area so all members have a better chance to attend meetings. The following meeting dates and locations have been set with exact meeting locations to be announced shortly.
The meetings will be held the third Wednesday of every month.

April 18-Long Beach
May 16-Sayville
June 20, 2012-Beach Location

Folks we had a great meeting last Thursday and as a result the Chapter has a new Executive Committee. Congratulations to the new Chapter Chair – Mark Davy, Vice Chair – Marvin Weiss, Secretary – Jeremy Thornton, and Volunteer Coordinator – Cristian Murphy. Ian Grunke and Tim Clare were elected as At-Large members of the Executive Committee. The Chapter is still seeking a Treasurer. Hopefully we can find and elect one at the January meeting. If you are interested in being the Chapter Treasurer please email chair@centralli.surfrider.org

Very many thanks to the volunteer leaders who were on the Executive Committee most recently, former Chair – Katie Lawrence, Vice Chair – Jim Brady, Secretary – Heidi Liebowitz, Treasurer – Sylvia Kopec, Volunteer Coordinator – Tom Bruckner, and former At-Large Member – Frank Messina.

Thanks also to those who joined or renewed their membership at the meeting. We’ll do a better job at retaining members if we can get more people to sign up for automatic renewal at surfrider.org. There is a red button in the upper right hand corner where you can give yourself a username and a password. Your email is the unique identifier or you can use your Surfrider Member Number. Once there you can tell the system to charge your credit card once a year (until it expires) so you’ll never forget to renew. You can also change your address, or other contact info by using this “My Account” feature.

There is a Chapter meeting tonight for Surfrider Foundation members at the Long Beach Public Library, 111 West Park Ave at 7PM upstairs.

If you are not currently a member or need to renew we can do it on the spot tonight.

There will be Chapter elections and overviews on the major issues the Chapter is working on.

Descriptions of the Elected Officer’s duties are on the chapter’s website.

Come on out, be ready to volunteer, and remember this is your Chapter.

There will be elections for the entire Executive Committee of the Chapter: Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer & Volunteer Coordinator.

The issues of Access in State Parks, the Army Corps’ return to Long Beach, and Nassau County’s Sewage Infrastructure Problems will be discussed. Committees on these issues will be formed.

Anyone interested in helping lead the chapter, or interested in working on these issues is urged to attend. Nominate yourself for any of these positions, even if you can’t attend. Contact chair@centralli.surfrider.org, or just come out to see what’s going on. This is your Chapter. It needs your support.

NY-Nassau County Spill Bill

Sewage Spills do happen, even in Nassau County, one of the wealthiest counties in the nation. Since 2001 there have been hundreds of violations at Nassau County sewage treatment plants that dump into our bays and oceans, and the public was never notified!

In April 2011, the Nassau County Right to Know of a Sewage Spill Bill was introduced into the County Legislature. This bill requires agencies to report sewage spills and other discharge violations to the public, but it has been stuck in committee. Tell the Presiding Officer to support the quick passage of the Sewage Spill Bill. If your family’s health is at risk, you have a right to know!

The Surfrider Foundation has created an Action Alert…

Do you know when you’re swimming, fishing, or clamming in sewage?

Earlier this year the Nassau County Right to Know of a Sewage Spill Bill was introduced that requires agencies to report sewage spills and other discharge violations to the public. Unfortunately, this bill has been sitting on Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt’s desk since April.

If you live in Nassau County, take action email Legislator Schmitt and tell him it is time the Spill Bill get’s on the calendar for a vote.

Right to Know Sewage Spill Bill

Here’s NEWS that really STINKS!

Sewage Spills do happen—even in Nassau County, one of the wealthiest counties in the nation. Since 2001 there have been hundreds of violations at our area’s sewage treatment plants that dump into our bays and oceans.

AND YOU WERE NEVER TOLD!

Question: Do you know when you’re swimming or fishing in sewage?

Answer: If your family’s health is at risk, you have a right to know!

See it for yourself: YouTube videos of illegal sewage discharges emptying into Reynold’s Channel from the Bay Park sewage treatment plant, occurring as recently as September 8, 2011. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnbRzbs39HU .

And still there is no plan for public notification of such a health-threatening event.

If you don’t believe this, call your local Nassau County Legislator. Ask why they are allowing your children’s health to be placed at risk. Demand that they support the NASSAU COUNTY RIGHT TO KNOW – SPILL BILL, the public notification legislation that has been sitting on Legislator Peter Schmitt’s desk since April 2011. That’s nearly half a year ago! And nothing yet has been done to protect the tax paying citizens of Nassau County.

If you’re mad enough to do something about this,

here’s what to do ————–

Attached are two Right to Know – Spill Bill letters, requiring that Nassau County Legislators advance the Spill Bill and vote in its favor. We urge ALL Nassau County residents to download both letters, fill in the missing information highlighted in green, print the letters and mail them as follows:

STEP 1 The first letter goes to the County Legislator who represents your own legislative district (LD). You can check the name of your legislator online at www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/Legis/ . (Click on “Who Is My Legislator?”)

STEP 2 The second letter is already addressed to Legislator Peter J. Schmitt. He is the Legislature’s Presiding Officer and Majority Leader. He controls whether the Spill Bill ever gets on the calendar for a vote. Make sure he gets this letter ASAP.

STEP 3 Wait several days and follow up with phone calls to your own legislator, to Leg. Peter Schmitt: 516-571-6211, and to County Executive Ed Mangano: 516-571-3131.

Tell them to push the Spill Bill to a vote and get it passed!

This is an election year! You vote! Your voice counts!
