Central Long Island

2018 Year in Review

Written by centralli | Jan 20, 2019 5:02:31 PM

2018 was another AMAZING year for our Central Long Island Surfrider Chapter!

Despite the Federal attacks on our coastlines and rollbacks on multiple environmental policies, we banned together and cleaned up more beaches than ever before, took a stand against all new offshore drilling, launched an Ocean Friendly Restaurants program in Long Island, helped to educate the public on plastic pollution and the zero-waste lifestyle, hosted 3 film screenings, saw new and old faces at all our cleanups and strengthened our alliances with like-minded organizations and businesses all over the island!

What a year!!

None of this would have been possible without the helping hands of our volunteers, alongside the financial support of our growing member base.  We are a grassroots, member-supported organization of passionate volunteers and WE COULDN'T PROTECT OUR OCEANS, WAVES & BEACHES WITHOUT YOU!!  Your membership dollars go directly to all our activist efforts on the ground. There's still time to give in 2018 to help us finish the year out strong, or start 2019 off as a supporting member for just $25/year.

We would like to share with you some of this years’ highlights:

Cleanups & More Cleanups!
In 2018, we organized more than 10 different beach cleanups from the North Shore to the South Shore, from Long Beach to Sayville, including a Halloween costume cleanup in Gilgo Beach with students from Uniondale High, our annual Blue Friday Cleanup, two International Coastal Cleanup Day cleanups, two popular SUP cleanups in Island Park and the 6th Annual Canal Cleanup in Long Beach.  We collectively removed over 1600 pounds of trash from our beaches and waterways in 2018!

1st Annual West Beech Street Clean-Up & Bar Crawl
This year, Surfrider CLI partnered with Barrier Brewing Co to address the excess trash left behind from by Long Beach’s celebrated Irish Day festival. Dozens of volunteers walked Long Beach's West Beech Street picking up trash, followed by a pub crawl, delicious snacks and great raffle prizes provided by
 generous sponsors.

 **NEW** Ocean Friendly Restaurant Campaign
In 2018, the Surfrider CLI Chapter excitedly launched our Ocean Friendly Restaurant program, signing on a dozen businesses committed to serving plastic-free meals and making as many sustainable choices in their establishments as possible. Scroll down for the list of these eco-business leaders or click here to read more on our website. Please make sure to support these amazing establishments and let us know if your local eatery should become our next Ocean Friendly Restaurant!
