VICTORY!
As of November 6, we are stoked to report that harmful ballot initiative 2117 was defeated!
If passed, Ballot Initiative 2117 would have repealed the Climate Commitment Act (CCA). This would have been an incredibly harmful and costly step backward for Washingtonians. The CCA is a critical piece of legislation that went into effect in 2023, creating a cap and trade carbon market. Polluters must purchase credits if they want to keep polluting. Not only does this incentivize industries to find ways to reduce their emissions, but the money generated in the market is reinvested into making Washington's communities more resilient.
The CCA has already contributed over 2 billion dollars in funding to projects ranging from salmon habitat restoration, electrification of transportation, community solar projects, wildfire prevention and protection, investments in public transportation (including our ferry system), and so much more! At least one-third of that money goes directly to burdened communities and Tribes that are disproportionately affected by climate change.
