Saturday September 25th saw many of Central Long Island’s Chapter members participating in the one or more of the many Beach Clean Ups Nationally Organized by the American Littoral Society. In the morning your author, and several other Surfrider members attended Senator Owen Johnson’s clean up of Robert Moses Field 2. While this clean up has historically been heavily attended by LIBBA members… This year saw over 450 Volunteers from all walks of life.

In the afternoon, I also personally attended a beach clean up of “the Old Coast Guard Station” at Gilgo State Park. This clean up; was only attended by 50 or so individuals. But both gave me an opportunity to work side by side with other beach user groups who may not be Central Long Island Chapter Members. On both occasions, I think we recruited new Surfrider members. In addition, by working elbow to elbow with other user groups; new friends are made. And this can only be helpful when negotiating beach access for both groups.

If you missed out on last weeks clean ups; The Long Beach High School Surf Club will be having their 5th Annual Community Beach Clean Up on Saturday October 16th at noon on National Beach Blvd.
These future leaders are the club that installed, and maintain Surfing Etiquette Signs, at various locations at Long Beach.
